What is Fair Calls For All?
Fair Calls For All is a public campaign about the cost of calling 1800, 1300 and 13 numbers from a mobile phone.
It costs up to $1.78 per minute to call 1800 ‘freecall’ and 13/1300 ‘local rate’ numbers from your mobile phone. If you called from a landline, these calls would be free or 30 cents.
We’ve seen examples where it’s cost people over $13 to make an appointment to donate blood, $18 to make a telephone banking call and $41 to make an insurance claim. Organisations that own 1800, 1300 and 13 numbers also pay a per-minute charge to receive these calls.
The Australian Communications Consumer Action Network (ACCAN) and supporters have been working with "Number Woman" to make sure calls to 1800, 1300 and 13 numbers are affordable for everyone.
Number Woman is ACCAN's superhero who helps explain why we want fair call rates from mobile phones. Number Woman blogs and tweets.
Since 2010 ACCAN has worked with our campaign partners, Financial Counselling Australia and the Australian Council of Social Services (ACOSS) on the issue of accessing 1800 and 13/1300 services from mobile phones. So far, over 70 organisations have endorsed the Fair Calls For All campaign.
